AFL-CIO Delegates Reelect Kirkland

DETROIT — Lane Kirkland was unanimously reelected Wednesday as president of the AFL-CIO, and convention delegates elected a Latino vice president for the first time.
The reelection of Kirkland, 69, and Secretary-Treasurer Tom Donahue, 63, had been expected at the biennial convention of the 14-million member trade union organization.
The election of Jack Otero of the Transportation Communications Union to vice president came after he and other minorities complained at the last AFL-CIO convention they lacked representation.
Otero replaced one of three women on the 33-member executive board. Susan Bianchi-Sand lost her reelection bid for the presidency of the Assn. of Flight Attendants, and resigned from the board.
The new executive board has 28 white men, two black men, two white women and one Latino man.
