Illinois: Carol Moseley Braun became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
Colorado: Democratic Rep. Ben Nighthorse Campbell defeated Republican Terry Considine in a tough race, becoming the only American Indian in the Senate.
Washington, D.C.: Voters returned former Mayor Marion Barry to elective office--a city council seat.
Vermont: Democratic Gov. Howard Dean was elected in what was once the nation’s most Republican state.
Maine: President Bush’s frequent visits to his vacation home in Kennebunkport didn’t help him carry this recession-weary state.
Missouri: Democrats claimed the governor’s mansion for the first time since 1976.
Hawaii: Sen. Daniel K. Inouye was reelected, overcoming allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman 17 years ago.
