Japan’s Trade Surplus Rises 39%: Japan’s trade surplus rose 39.4% in January to $5.29 billion, more than half of it with the United States, the government announced. The continued weakness of Japan’s domestic economy--and resulting sagging in imports--was a major factor in the expansion of the surplus, the Finance Ministry said. Imports fell 6.4% to $18.88 billion, while exports inched up 0.8% to $24.17 billion. Japan’s surplus with the United States grew 20% to $2.95 billion, the ministry said.
