MOGADISHU, Somalia — Operation Restore Hope claimed its first U.S. noncombat death, an Army soldier who died of head wounds from a road accident.
Pvt. David J. Connor, 19, of Huntington Beach, died Monday at a hospital in Mombasa, Kenya, where he had been flown after the supply truck he was driving crashed Feb. 7 outside Bela Dogle, 65 miles northwest of Mogadishu, the Army said.
Connor, with the 57th Transport Company of the 10th Mountain Division based at Ft. Drum, N.Y., lost control of the truck when he swerved to avoid a pothole, officials said.
Three other Americans have died of wounds from gunfire or mines during the Somalia mission.
