SARASOTA, Fla. — George Archer produced the day’s low round, but it was Tom Weiskopf who made the big news in Friday’s first round of the Chrysler Cup, the Senior PGA Tour team competition between the United States and an international squad.
Archer’s seven-under-par 65 paced the United States to a nine-stroke lead in the three-day, 54-hole tournament. However, it was Weiskopf--making his first appearance in a Senior event--who grabbed the attention.
Coming off recent knee surgery and saying he began hitting balls only two weeks ago, Weiskopf produced a six-under-par 66.
The event is both team and individual competition. Each team takes its five lowest of eight rounds while the 16 players also compete in 54-hole individual play.
