FRANKFURT : Bad News for Kohl

Residents of the large western state of Hesse (which includes Frankfurt) go to the polls Sunday in Germany’s only election of 1993, and the results are likely to prove a further setback for Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s ruling Christian Democrats.
In normal times, few would even care about the vote because it is limited to local community government offices.
But these aren’t normal times for Germany and as the lone ballot-box test of a fast-souring public mood, the results will have an impact nationally. Recent voter opinion surveys indicate the chancellor’s Christian Democrats will be drubbed.
