NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Retrial of Officer to Stay in Capital
- Share via
The manslaughter retrial of a suspended Miami police officer will not be moved out of Florida’s capital, despite requests from both the prosecution and the defense for a change of venue. “It’s time for this trial to come to a conclusion,” Circuit Judge W. Thomas Spencer said. “I find no abiding prejudice, bias and preconceived opinions in Tallahassee.” William Lozano shot a black motorcyclist in 1989, and the death of the biker and his passenger from the resulting motorcycle accident touched off rioting in Miami. Prosecutors had asked for a six-month delay to let fears of racial tensions cool. When the judge decided that the trial should start Monday as scheduled, they immediately joined the defense to request a change of venue.
