David A. Lipton; Publicity Executive at Universal Pictures

David A. Lipton, 86, for many years vice president of advertising and publicity for Universal Pictures and its parent company, MCA Inc. A native of Chicago, Lipton began his career as an office boy and then moved into publicity. In 1934, he publicized the legendary fan dancer Sally Rand at the Chicago World’s Fair. Lipton moved west in 1940 to become publicity director of Universal Studios. After a stint during World War II as liaison for the Motion Picture War Activities Committee and the Army Pictorial Service, he returned to Universal to head publicity and advertising. He was named vice president in 1951. In 1967, he received the Publicists’ Guild award for career achievement. On Tuesday in Los Angeles.
