BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Holds On in IV-AA

Corona del Mar High of Newport Beach held off a late rally by Playa del Rey St. Bernard to win the Southern Section Division IV-AA boys’ basketball championship, 47-46, Friday night at Costa Mesa Estancia High.
Corona del Mar guard Todd Merriman made two free throws with 21 seconds to play to give the Sea Kings (17-12) a 47-43 lead after St. Bernard had rallied from a 31-22 third-quarter deficit to within 45-43.
Corona del Mar made 13 of 15 free throws, including six of eight in the final 3:12. Chris Quinn led the Sea Kings with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Terrell Hickmon led St. Bernard (13-15) with 19 points.
Both teams were at-large entries in the IV-AA playoffs.
