Nearly 30 years after U.S. marshals escorted black children into an all-white school, we are being asked to accept a restructuring plan for the Los Angeles School District that still believes separate is equal. LEARN’s “For All Our Children” proposal does not accurately recognize and/or represent students with disabilities.
Imagine if you were told that your child’s educational needs could only be served by attending a a classroom with little or no integration, and the school would be outside your neighborhood.
There are 62,115 special education students in the LAUSD. My son, Brandon, is one. I want choices based on the knowledge that he will not be denied services he needs to benefit from his education.
There were eight forums in which the public could review a document made available to the public only a bit more than a month ago. The March 15 vote should be postponed until parents, including those of special-education students, are given time to fully review the plan and comment.
