Having spent several days in Zermatt and Kandersteg last summer, I was quick to devour the articles on each. For less adventurous types such as I, the following mountain villages make idyllic bases for day hiking. Prospective hikers should consider Saas Fee, Murren and Wengen. There are inexpensive accommodations in all.
