The Vanishing (Cinemax Monday at 5:15 a.m.) This is the 1988 Dutch original, a real nail-biter, a clean, logical nightmare with a fantastically absorbing plot that’s just been remade by Hollywood.
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Bravo Tuesday at 5 p.m.) is the Michael Powell-Emeric Pressburger 1943 classic, starring a superb Roger Livesey as a kindly, aristocratic officer who finds himself obsolete with the outbreak of World War II.
Hangin’ With the Homeboys (Showtime Wednesday at 9 p.m.) is a pure joy, a sweet and funny 1991 take on life in the South Bronx, written and directed by Joseph B. Vasquez, set during a long, hectic Friday night and centering on four young men, one of whom is played by the protean John Leguizamo.
Jesus of Montreal (Bravo Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at midnight) is a soaring, multifaceted pleasure. As seen by French-Canadian writer-director Denys Arcand, this lethal 1989 satire of contemporary pop culture deals with sex, religion, morality and the afterlife.
