Leaving NPR: Douglas J. Bennet, the president of National Public Radio since 1983, has accepted a nomination to be assistant secretary of state for international organizations, the White House has announced. Bennet was head of the U.S. Agency for International Development from 1979-1981 and assistant secretary of state for congressional relations from 1977-1979. He is credited with overseeing the revitalization of cultural programming at NPR and helping it evolve into a major news organization. An interim NPR president is expected to be named this week.
