Newspaper Launches Three-Digit Info Line: The newspaper industry’s first experiment in selling information through a three-digit telephone number generated hundreds of calls and encountered few glitches, said the publisher of the Palm Beach Post in Florida. The service offers sports scores, stock prices, horoscopes and weather by dialing 511. Other services, including crosswords and comics, will be available by fax. The charge for local calls is 35 cents for up to five minutes. Callers from outside the local area can dial a 900 number and pay 35 cents a minute to use the service. The number was awarded to the Post in October as part of a two-year test by Florida’s Public Service Commission.
