GLENDALE : Advisers Disciplined Over Distributing AIDS Flyers

Two adult advisers for a student service club at a Glendale high school have been disciplined for distributing sexually explicit AIDS awareness pamphlets to students after irate parents mounted pressure on school officials.
Marilyn Gunnell, who served as the Glendale Sunrise Rotary volunteer liaison to the Hoover High School’s Interact Club, has been replaced because of her role in distributing the pamphlets. Lee Starke, a science teacher who acts as faculty adviser to Interact, has agreed to stop talking about AIDS during club meetings for the rest of the year.
The club distributed the brochures, published by the Los Angeles County Health Department, from information tables during AIDS Awareness Week, Nov. 30 to Dec. 4, and during a school fund-raising event off campus about a week later. The pamphlets did not have the approval of a school administrator, as school district policy requires.
