Marcy Crouch

School: Marina

Sport: Softball

Position: Pitcher

Class: Sophomore

Although she just returned to the softball field after helping Marina win a Southern Section Division I co-championship in soccer two weeks ago, Crouch pitched her first two games of the season last week and was flawless. Crouch pitched a perfect game in the championship game of the Laguna Hills tournament, leading Marina to a 1-0 victory over Irvine. Crouch struck out seven in the title game, but Coach Shelly Luth stressed that the perfection in the Vikings’ championship was a team effort. “There were 14 other outs so it was a total team effort,” Luth said. “When a pitcher knows the defense will play well, she can relax more.” Crouch also pitched four innings to earn the victory as Marina defeated Tustin, 2-0, in the quarterfinals. Shutouts are not unusual for Crouch, who finished last season 10-3 with a 0.61 earned-run average, six shutouts and one no-hitter. “She’s a great athlete,” Luth said.

Other top performers:

Nicole Erickson, who scored the game-winning basket in the final four seconds to give Brea-Olinda a 42-41 victory over Fair Oaks Bella Vista in the Division II State championship basketball game. Erickson finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds helping the Ladycats to their third consecutive State championship.

Kim Bragalone, who won the 100 and 200 freestyles to lead Esperanza to the team championship at the Sonora Swim Invitational.
