$30,000 Ceremony: Wrong Priorities

* Blenda Wilson’s $30,000 inauguration as president of Cal State Northridge is a prime example of what is wrong with the priorities in the U. S. educational system.

If a corporation that was going bankrupt brought in a new president, would it spend $30,000 on the “pomp and circumstance” of an inauguration?

I understand that other universities of CSUN’s size may spend as much or more money on inaugurations. But is this type of ceremony really a priority for CSUN’s very limited budget? In a time when the periodical section of the school library has been cut by two-thirds and student fees are doubling, how can Wilson justify this kind of expenditure?

This inauguration is yet another example of how California State educational system chooses image over substance.

Thirty thousand dollars could have bought a lot of periodicals and books.
