Hijuelos’ mother claims that he was the first Hispanic to win a Pulitzer Prize. Although it in no way diminishes Hijuelos’ remarkable achievement, the late Nicholas Dante won a Pulitzer in 1976 as co-author of the 1975 musical “A Chorus Line.” Dante’s friends and associates are aware that he was born Conrado Morales, of Puerto Rican parents in Spanish Harlem. Dante took much pride in his heritage and was honored, before his death, by Nosotros, the Latino entertainment industry organization.
