With a victory at Long Beach Wilson in today’s quarterfinals, University will get a shot at top-seeded Santa Barbara in the Southern Section Division I boys’ tennis playoffs. The Dons (20-1), who play at Beverly Hills, have won five consecutive Division I titles and seven of the last eight.
University (18-3), the fourth-seeded team, last season advanced to the Division I semifinals, where it lost to Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula. So far, University has breezed past Long Beach Poly, 18-0, and Marina, 14-4.
The Trojans figure to have a tougher time with Long Beach Wilson, which advanced two doubles teams and two singles players into the section individual tournament.
If Corona del Mar (19-1), seeded third, defeats Diamond Bar (19-1) today, it would play Peninsula (22-0) in Thursday’s semifinals. The Sea Kings, who have placed two doubles teams in the round of 16 individual draw, have beaten Long Beach Millikan, 17-1, and Rio Mesa Oxnard, 11-7.
Woodbridge (14-6), which did not advance any players into the individual tournament, will play at Peninsula.
In Division II, Sunny Hills (19-) will seek to continue its playoff dominance against visiting West Hills Chaminade (15-5) at the Sunny Hills Racquet Club. Sunny Hills, seeded second, has not dropped a point to Encino Crespi or La Verne Damien. Chaminade barely advanced to the quarterfinals, tying Garden Grove, 9-9, but winning in games, 78-74.
Trabuco Hills (20-2), seeded third, travels to Palm Desert (19-0) and Esperanza (18-5) travels to Redlands (15-2).
