Glendale : 28 Apply for College Post

Glendale Community College has received 28 applications in its statewide search for an associate dean of student activities, officials said.

The position--with an annual salary ranging from $52,860 to $67,464--became vacant July 1 after Associate Dean Jim Baugh requested a transfer back to his former job overseeing special projects.

College President John A. Davitt had appointed Baugh last year to replace Walt Smith, who retired.

Applicants were given a July 15 deadline to be considered for review by a nine-member search committee of students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Donald F. Averill, administrative dean of human resources, said the committee is expected to narrow the field of 20 male and eight female candidates by mid- or late August. The names of the four top candidates will be submitted to Davitt, whose final choice will be subject to approval of college trustees.

Averill said that seven of the 28 come from within Glendale college and that 42% of the applicants are minorities--three Asian-Americans, five blacks, three Latinos and one American Indian. Most applicants live in Southern California.

“It’s a relatively good pool,” said Averill, who declined to release the applicants’ names.

The job involves overseeing programs, community service, support or action groups and athletics on the 15,000-student campus.
