Brea OKs ‘Tough’ Anti-Graffiti Law

BREA — In an effort to crack down on the spread of graffiti, the City Council this week unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting minors from possessing graffiti-making devices.
Under the new law, police have the authority to stop and search juveniles who are thought to be carrying graffiti-making utensils. Police may seize such items, cite the minors and call their parents.
Juveniles caught committing graffiti vandalism, known as tagging, will face a penalty of up to 200 hours of community service, possible jail time and revocation of their driver’s licenses. Their parents will be liable for graffiti removal costs of up to $10,000.
In addition, stores that sell spray paint and marking pens will be required to keep the items behind locked display cases.
Council members said the new ordinance is a “tough law” against graffiti vandals in Brea.
