4 Players Named to Volleyball Hall of Fame

Four players from the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. were inducted into the Legend’s Hall of Fame on Thursday in Long Beach.
The inductees are Manhattan Beach natives and Mira Costa High graduates Nina Matthies and LeValley Pattison, and Liz Masakayan and Gail Castro.
Matthies, the women’s volleyball coach at Pepperdine, founded the WPVA in 1987 and competed until 1992. Pattison, who played at Cal State Long Beach and UC Santa Barbara, retired in 1991 to become WPVA tour director.
Masakayan, a former UCLA All-American and U.S. National team member, shares the No. 1 ranking in the WPVA this year with partner Karolyn Kirby. Castro, a former middle blocker at Cal State Long Beach, is ranked fifth.

The Olympias Girls Development League will sponsor a basketball tournament for those 18 and under on Saturday at Harbor College.

The Inglewood recreation department will sponsor the second annual City of Champions karate tournament from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Rogers Park and Recreation Center.

The Southern California table tennis championships will be staged at the Mira Costa High boys’ gym Sept. 11-12.
The event is sanctioned by the United States Table Tennis Assn. and is open to beginners as well as advanced players. The deadline for registration is Sept. 7. Fees vary from $2 to $7, depending on the division.

A softball clinic for girls 9 and older will be conducted at the Wilmington Athletic Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
The two-day instruction will cover pitching, hitting, fielding, catching and baserunning. Instructors will include former and current collegiate softball players. The athletic complex is at 1700 Figueroa St. in Wilmington. The fee is $50.

Dominguez Hills will play host to three days of co-ed and men’s seven-a-side soccer tournaments this month to help support its men’s and women’s soccer programs.
The field will be about half the size of a regulation soccer field, there is no offsides and teams may substitute on the fly. The men’s open tournament is scheduled for Sunday and the co-ed event is Saturday.
In addition, there will be a men’s 35-and-over tournament Aug. 28 and a second men’s open event Aug. 29. Information: (310) 325-9305.

The city of Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring a basketball camp for girls 11 to 16.
The camp, limited to the first 40 girls, starts Aug. 16 and ends Sept. 3. The camp runs from 3 to 7 p.m. daily. Participants will receive a T-shirt, notebook, player profile card and certificate of participation. The cost is $35.
