POETIC JUSTICE: Film-Making South Central Style by John Singleton & Veronica Chambers (Delta: $12.95; 251 pp., illustrated, paperback original). Singleton’s detailed screenplay and preliminary diary entries reveal the mind of the talented young writer/director at work. The differences between the script and the finished film demonstrate how much was created spontaneously on the set. Chambers sounds more like a cheerleader than a reporter in her breathless account of the making of the film: Everyone involved in the production (even actresses not cast) is talented, beautiful, regal, etc. Any insights she discovers into Singleton’s methods get lost in the welter of superlatives.
