KENOSHA, Wis. — A man who left a videotape praising serial killers and saying the world had done him wrong opened fire Tuesday in a McDonald’s restaurant, killing one person and wounding two others before killing himself, police said.
The 26-year-old man also had said in the videotape that he had dug up Abraham Lincoln’s body and put the corpse in his bathtub, police Lt. Steve Pataska told reporters.
The man, dressed in military fatigues, fired several shots with a .44-caliber long-barreled pistol as the 10 to 15 people inside the restaurant dove for cover, Pataska said. The man yelled for everyone to leave or to get down, and randomly shot those who didn’t move fast enough, Pataska said.
Police did not know why the man chose McDonald’s for the attack. He left an AR-15 assault rifle in the parking lot after apparently locking an ammunition clip in his car and not realizing he had another loaded clip in his pocket, Pataska said.
“This could have been considerably worse than it was,” he said.
The gunman killed a 50-year-old man, Pataska said. A 39-year-old woman was in critical condition after surgery for a gunshot wound in her side, and an 18-year-old man who had a flesh wound in the wrist was treated at a hospital and released.
The gunman, who shot himself in the head before police arrived, and his victims weren’t immediately identified.
The motive for the shootings wasn’t clear, but Pataska said that on a 40-minute videotape found in the man’s car, “He makes reference that the world has screwed with him for some time and now it’s payback time.”
