Ventura County sheriff’s investigators have arrested a third Latino man suspected of assaulting two black men in a racially motivated attack last week, officials said Sunday.
Jose Martin Hernandez, 21, of Thousand Oaks was taken into custody by Simi Valley police late Saturday on traffic warrants, police said. Sheriff’s detectives later identified Hernandez as a suspect in an assault against two black men last Wednesday at an apartment complex.
Investigators said the three Latinos, including a 15-year-old boy, attacked the two men with golf clubs and a knife, yelling racial slurs. Neither Wilburn Barnett, 38, of Anaheim or Derek Andrews, 20, of Thousand Oaks was seriously injured.
Hernandez was booked at Ventura County Jail on charges of felony assault and violating the victims’ civil rights.
Marko Casanova, 18, of Thousand Oaks was arrested on similar charges Friday night in the same case, and the 15-year-old boy was booked at Juvenile Hall, police said.
