Allied Signal in Avionics Talks: The company’s Torrance-based aerospace unit is exploring a joint venture with Sextant Avionique of France to form one of the world’s largest producers of avionics, with annual sales exceeding $1 billion. The venture would rival Honeywell and Rockwell International’s Collins unit for leadership in avionics, which comprises various electronic gear in aircraft cockpits. Sextant Avionique, controlled by the French companies Thomson-CSF and Aerospatiale, has been struggling recently amid the worldwide slump in demand for commercial jetliners.
