Gasoline Prices Stay Low: Vacationing motorists driving home over the Labor Day weekend can expect the lowest gasoline prices since 1986, according to the American Automobile Assn., paying an average of $1.10 for a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline. Lower crude oil prices--a key factor in holding down the price of gasoline--and increased supply because of expanded refining capacity have pushed national prices lower than a year ago by 5.7 cents, and by 2.3 cents from the Fourth of July. A lackluster economy and more efficient cars have lowered demand for gasoline, as has the recession in California.
