An 86-year-old motorist was killed Saturday when he ignored warning barriers and attempted to beat a locomotive across train tracks in the San Gabriel Valley, police said.
Angelo Gramrosa of San Gabriel died when his car was thrown 80 feet in the impact with a Southern Pacific engine that was traveling about 50 m.p.h., authorities said.
Gramrosa was headed north on Temple City Boulevard about 20 m.p.h. when he cut around barriers across the tracks and was struck broadside by the engine, police said.
He was the sole passenger in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 11:40 a.m. The rail crossing is near the border of El Monte, Temple City and Rosemead.
