Highlights
Costa Mesa won its first outright league football title in its 32-year history. The last time it shared a league title was 1978. The Mustangs lost the Southern Section championship game to Trabuco Hills, 44-6. Offensive lineman/linebacker Bryan Luxembourger was the league’s most valuable player, and running back Binh Tran (1,499 regular-season yards) shared the offensive player of the year award with Laguna Hills’ Fred Kim. The championship victory was sweet revenge for Trabuco Hills, which had lost, 13-3, to Costa Mesa earlier in the season in its worst showing of the year. It was a splendid goodby--Trabuco Hills moves to the South Coast League and is making the jump from Division VIII to Division I. Three quarterbacks combined for 18 touchdowns and only two interceptions during the regular season for Trabuco Hills; cornerback Geoff Beckham was the defensive player of the year. Laguna Hills had two of the league’s most highly touted offensive players in running back Fred Kim and quarterback Justin Vedder. Kim rushed for 1,339 yards and 17 touchdowns, and Vedder came on toward the end of the season to finish with 17 touchdown passes against six interceptions. Laguna Beach broke a 17-game PCL losing streak, stopping a two-point conversion attempt in the final moments of a 28-27 victory over Estancia.
