GARDEN GROVE — A small pipe bomb found on the shoulder of the westbound Garden Grove Freeway was safely removed and defused by the Orange County Sheriff’s bomb squad Sunday morning, authorities said.
The westbound lanes between Euclid and Brookhurst streets were closed for an hour and 10 minutes after a California Department of Transportation cleanup crew found the device at 10:09 a.m., a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said.
One end of the 1-by-6-inch device appeared to have a fuse that had been burned, but it didn’t detonate, said Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Leonard.
It was not known how the device came to be placed on the freeway shoulder.
