OUTLOOK
The Vaqueros won the 1992 Division II title with 10 returning starters and the past two Division IV titles with four returning starters. Five are back this year. There’s certainly help on the way: Last year’s freshman and sophomore teams were undefeated. Deal, a legitimate talent, is battling Clark and Gaitor to fill the shoes of Tony Mathis (1,839 yards, 26 touchdowns) as Irvine tries to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive section championship. Hagstrom was a first-team all-leaguer; Clark and Miele made the second team. Larsen replaces QB Mike Phelps (24 TDs, 2,233 yards); like Phelps, Larsen won’t throw a varsity pass until his senior year.
