THE LAND OF THE INCAS photographs by Hans Silverstein, text by Jacques Soustelle, translated from the French by Jane Breton (Thames & Hudson: $19.95; unpaginated). Soustelle’s brief text traces the later history of the Inca empire, noting that Pizarro’s conquest was facilitated by a murderous civil war. Silverstein’s glorious photographs show life continuing in the shadows of monolithic ruins devoid of the exuberant decorations of Meso-American art. The often handsome faces of the people reveal the toll the high altitudes exact.
