Men with machetes and chain saws killed 62 people, mainly women and children, in an attack on a village in Liberia last week, U.N. officials said in Geneva. The “terrible massacre” happened April 9 in Yosi, said UNICEF spokesman Damien Personnaz. He said details are only now emerging from survivors who made it to a hospital in the port city of Buchanan, about 30 miles away. About 190 villagers were rounded up, but many men escaped into the forest. Another UNICEF spokesman said it is unclear whether the attack was masterminded by rebel leader Charles Taylor’s forces or a breakaway faction.
