OUTLOOK
Though the Sailors never got the same kind of recognition as Division I powers Mater Dei or Los Alamitos, they were certainly among the elite, going unbeaten in winning the Division V title. Newport Harbor didn’t waste its points in 1994, either; seven of its 14 victories were by seven points or fewer. Three starting offensive linemen return, Pepic, Baker and Hetrick. Pulido could be a big-time performer this season--he caught five passes in the championship game--and Pepic is one of the section’s best tackles. Mason will be called upon to replace Brian Johnson (1,117 yards, 13 touchdowns) in the backfield. Two transfers could help: Scalzo (Savanna) provides some size on the line, and Werner (Mater Dei). The defense is a question because of its inexperience.
