Volunteers will pick up trash along 1,100 miles of California’s coastline as part of the California Coastal Commission’s Cleanup Day on Sept. 23.
Nancy Bruland, an Orange County park ranger at Upper Newport Bay, said potential volunteers should be prepared for a challenging day.
“It is hard to believe what we find,” she said. “We have found refrigerators, old tires and even shopping carts in the bay.” She recommended that volunteers wear old shoes, long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
The Coastal Commission reported that the 40,000 people who helped clean up beaches and inland waterways last year collected more than 550,000 pounds of trash.
