HUNTINGTON BEACH — Bellflower St. John Bosco scored two second-half touchdowns and shut out Huntington Beach after halftime to rally for a 20-12 victory Friday night at Huntington Beach High.
The Braves held Huntington Beach to minus-22 yards in the second half after the Oilers (0-1) compiled 182 first-half yards on the way to a 12-6 halftime lead.
St. John Bosco (1-0) scored first on an eight-yard run by Jerald Atkins in the first quarter. Huntington Beach tied it, 6-6, on a four-yard run by David Yadrick with 4 minutes 1 second left in the second quarter.
The Oilers took a 12-6 lead on the final play of the first half--a 36-yard pass form Yadrick to wide receiver David Van Hoorebeke.
The Braves came back early in the third quarter when quarterback Todd Husak scored on a nine-yard run. Joe Cordova’s extra point gave St. John Bosco a 13-12 lead.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Husak scored on a 35-yard run, extending the lead to 20-12.
Huntington Beach had a chance to tie it after Chad Jenkins recovered a fumble at St. John Bosco’s 11 with five minutes remaining in the game. But two plays later, receiver Scott Moser fumbled after catching a pass from Yadrick at the Bosco five.
