ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Brass Pushes Sonora Past Laguna Hills

MISSION VIEJO — Shawn Brass scored three touchdowns to lead Sonora to a 39-28 victory over Laguna Hills in the battle of 1994 league champions Friday night at Mission Viejo High.
Brass scored on touchdown runs of three and 12 yards and on an 81-yard pass from Kevin Rodrigues as Sonora overcame a 239-yard rushing performance by Laguna Hills sophomore Mike Jones.
Laguna Hills took a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter on touchdown runs of 31 yards and one yard by Jones before Sonora took control. The Raiders outscored the Hawks, 32-6, to take a commanding 39-20 lead with 6:13 left.
Sam Escobar scored from one yard and Tony Holgain added a touchdown from five yards to give Sonora a 19-14 halftime lead.
Escobar scored on a 54-yard run early in the third quarter and Jay Johnson countered with a 20-yard touchdown run for Laguna Hills to keep the Hawks within 25-20.
An 81-yard touchdown pass to Brass with 2:42 left in the third quarter and a 12-yard touchdown run by Brass in the fourth quarter gave the Raiders a comfortable lead.
Launa Hills quarterback Cory Pardoe completed the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run with 1:28 left.
Despite giving up 396 yards, Laguna Hills had a stellar defensive performance by sophomore linebacker Anthony Daye, who made 12 tackles.
