Brink Finishes Harvard Career After 15 Years

Coach Jim Brink of Harvard-Westlake High has retired after 15 years in the school’s baseball program.
As the varsity coach since 1981, Brink had a career record of 165-178-2 and led his teams to seven playoff appearances.
Harvard-Westlake is currently accepting applications for the job. Resumes can be sent to Gary Thran, the school’s athletic director.

John Verhoeven, a former major-league pitcher with the California Angels, has been hired as an assistant coach at Pepperdine.
Verhoeven will work with Pepperdine’s pitching staff and help with recruiting. He replaces Geoff Zahn, who was hired this week as the head coach at Michigan.
Soccer
Monica Gerardo from Simi Valley High set a Notre Dame record with four goals Thursday as the second-ranked Fighting Irish defeated Indiana, 7-0.
Gerardo, a freshman, scored a pair of goals in each half as Notre Dame improved to 3-0.
Golf
Jody Duclos, Sylvia Kim, Cynthia Lyons and Cherie Zaun have qualified for the Mid-Amateur Championship at Essex Country Club in Manchester, Mass., starting on Sept. 18.
Softball
The T-Devils are seeking fast-pitch softball players for a girls’ traveling team. Spots are open for girls 18 and under.

Miscellany
The Burroughs High School Arrowhead Club has scheduled a car show Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school’s football field.
Awards will be presented in stock and modified classes for custom cars, trucks and motorcycles. Proceeds will benefit the Burroughs football program.
