Central Los Angeles : A NEW KIND OF SERVICE

City officials and three former Los Angeles Rams presided at a ribbon-cutting Thursday for a new social services building in South Los Angeles. It replaces a liquor store that was burned during the 1992 riots. The land has been owned since 1967 by former Rams defensive back Woodley Lewis. Lewis had wanted to rebuild the three-store mini-mall to include another liquor store, but encountered strong opposition from residents. Instead, on West Manchester Avenue near Inglewood, Lewis decided to build an office for a different sort of tenant: El Nido Family Centers.
The group, which has 14 other centers in Los Angeles County, will provide counseling and case management to pregnant teen-agers and their parents, according to program director Stacy Banks.
