ORANGE — Battling to stay in the playoff picture, El Modena was deep in Orange territory, trailing by seven, with time winding down Thursday night. Fullback Dan Kingman, who rushed for 124 yards in 20 carries, fumbled the ball on the Orange 11-yard line with 76 seconds remaining.
Orange’s Mario Quintanar pounced on the ball, sealing a 22-17 victory at El Modena, keeping Orange’s playoff chances alive and ending those of El Modena (5-4-1, 1-3-1).
Orange (5-4-1, 2-2-1) needs a Villa Park victory over Foothill and a Santa Ana Valley victory over Canyon tonight to qualify for the playoffs.
Orange’s big-play offense struck early in the second quarter. Quarterback Shawn McCraw, who threw for 128 yards and a touchdown, connected with Terrence Williams on a 38-yard pass play. On the next play, running back Carlos Heard scored from 32 yards.
