FDA Approves New Menopause Pill

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first combined estrogen and progestin tablet for women taking hormone replacement medication during menopause.
Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories said Monday it had won clearance to market the combined tablets, which could simplify therapy for the 4.6 million menopausal women in the United States who take estrogen and progestin.
Physicians prescribe hormone replacement therapy to help women avoid bone loss and to treat such symptoms of menopause as hot flashes and night sweats.
The tablets will be sold under the brand names Prempro and Premphase.
