Alternative School a Matter of Choice
As a family that has been part of the Open Alternative Program at Conejo Elementary School, we were thrilled to see your paper’s coverage Nov. 21 of our program’s Harvest Feast. It’s wonderful for our community to see the hard work and commitment of the teachers, children and parents to less traditional teaching methods.
A serious misstatement needs to be corrected. This program is not, as quoted, “a school-room home for children who have problems with concentration, self-esteem and/or other difficulties in a more traditional classroom.”
Rather, it is a choice made by families discouraged by the quality of their neighborhood schools. Most of these children were quite successful in their neighborhood schools, but they did not enjoy school--there was no love for learning and their parents wanted more for them.
