GLOBAL EFFORT

Readers of the recent Calendar story on the rebuilt Shakespeare’s Globe (“The Globe, Act 2,” by William D. Montalbano, Dec. 10) would be justified in assuming that this interesting feature has little direct connection with Los Angeles, but they would be wrong.
The Globe maintains active regional offices in the U.S. and throughout the world. One is in Los Angeles. Since 1989, the Western Region office, with the cooperation of local institutions, has offered its local education program of teaching conferences for educators, acting/directing workshops for theater professionals and Shakespeare-in-translation to L.A.’s multicultural audience, which can enjoy the plays or scenes from them in 10 languages other than English.
With the opening of the Globe imminent, Angelenos can look forward to more local Shakespeare in 1996, with a seminar on “Shakespeare and the Japanese Theatre” on Jan. 14 and, on April 6, a conference with international participation on “Teaching Shakespeare in the Multicultural Classroom,” immediately prior to the World Shakespeare Congress, which will be welcomed at the Biltmore for its first U.S. convening on April 7-13.
