GLENDALE — A 14-year-old boy shot himself in the right leg Saturday afternoon after threatening four holiday shoppers at the Glendale Galleria, police said.
Glendale Police Sgt. Rick Young said the incident began when four young Los Angeles men bumped into three Los Angeles teenagers about 3 p.m. The groups exchanged words but separated, Young said.
The two groups later met in a parking structure on Central Avenue, and a 16-year-old challenged the four men to fight, the sergeant said.
One of the teenager’s friends, a 14-year-old, then brandished a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol and threatened to shoot the four men, Young said. The 14-year-old then shoved the gun back into his pants and it fired accidentally, Young said.
Police said the four men ran when they heard the shot, but were detained for questioning.
The boy was treated at Glendale Adventist Medical Center and will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon and the discharge of a firearm in a negligent manner, Young said.
