Dia Board Upheaval: The board of New York’s Dia Center for the Arts, which has won praise for its risk-taking exhibitions and stunning installations, disintegrated rapidly this week as nearly half of the center’s 21 trustees resigned. Ashton Hawkins, the board’s chairman since 1985, announced he would resign as of Feb. 13, and seven other board members decided to follow him. Some of those departing said they had lost confidence in Michael Govan, a former deputy director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum who became Dia’s director in August 1994. The board’s problems coincide with the start of a $12-million fund-raising campaign to establish a permanent endowment that would erase Dia’s $750,000 deficit and provide operating funds.
