Jackson Video Update: A Rio de Janeiro judge on Tuesday paved the way for Michael Jackson to film his video for “They Don’t Care About Us” in a Rio shantytown, a day after he had effectively banned the controversial shoot, a lawyer for the production team said Tuesday. But there was a possibility Jackson and film director Spike Lee might abandon plans to film in the hillside slum. “There’s no guarantee the filming will now take place,” lawyer Morris Israel said. “These people can’t be kept on a tightrope like this.” On Monday, a judge suspended any filming for 20 days at the request of a private lawyer who accused Jackson of seeking to exploit Brazil’s poverty. The judge has now said the project, which has enraged Rio authorities who fear bad publicity, could resume in five days if the production team proves it has all necessary authorization.
