Firing Halted at Range After Ballistics Report

A ballistics report released Wednesday by the city indicates a high probability that a stray bullet that recently penetrated the back door of a home came from the nearby police gun range.
As a result of the report, based on a study by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, firing will be suspended at the range beginning today until a comprehensive safety review is completed, said Richard Wright, president of the Huntington Beach Police Officers Assn., which operates the range.
The City Council this week voted to shut down the range, citing concerns about public safety even though no injuries were caused in the home on Ford Drive by the Jan. 23 incident.
The police union leases the property, southwest of Gothard Street and Talbert Avenue, from the city. The range is used by the Huntington Beach Police Department and dozens of other law enforcement agencies.
Wright said the decision to close the range “had nothing to do with the order issued” by the council Monday but with concern for public safety.
The sheriff’s report concluded that “marks are present on the evidence bullet that strongly suggests” it was fired from the range.
