Avalon to Annex Parcel From County

Catalina’s only city will double in size next year when Avalon annexes one mile of unincorporated Los Angeles County land.
An industrial area that houses a freight yard and sewer treatment plant will be formally added to the city limits in addition to a residential area near the city, officials said. Making the land part of Avalon will make it easier to provide fire and maintenance services to the surrounding areas, Avalon City Manager Rob Clark said.
“The areas are really part of our region,” Clark said. “The point of doing this is to have some cohesiveness. This way everyone will be working under the same set of rules.”
The county Fire Department serves the unincorporated area, but Clark said Avalon also helps in the area because it has a larger staff than the county. When the annexation is complete, all services will be provided by Avalon.
Clark said an unspecified amount of property tax money collected by the county will be turned over to the city for operating costs.
