Westside : CAJUN CELEBRATION
The Santa Monica Pier will take on the character of the New Orleans waterfront tonight and over the weekend with a celebration of Mardi Gras.
The three-day event will begin with a parade, dancing and a blues concert at 7 p.m. Friday on the Santa Monica Pier.
An arts and crafts fair, Cajun cooking, dancing and music will continue throughout the day Saturday and Sunday. Jazz and blues concerts, costume contests and dance competitions will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
But the West Coast version of Mardi Gras promises to be a G-rated event. Santa Monica’s celebration is aimed at the family crowd, organizers said, with none of the scantily clad women and drinking traditionally associated with Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
