Refrigerator Put Into Retirement

Refrigerator, the richest quarter horse in racing history, is being retired after six years of racing.

Refrigerator earned year-end championships annually between 1990-94, including the overall world title in 1992-93. The 8-year-old gelding won 10 Grade I races in his career, including the prestigious All American Futurity and three consecutive Champion of Champions stakes.

His earnings of $2,126,309 make him the richest American quarter horse in history.

“It’s been the highest of highs to own a horse like Refrigerator,” said owner James E. Helzer of Arlington, Texas.

Adams Trail, a 13-1 longshot, led all the way in winning Thursday’s $60,000 feature race at Santa Anita by 5 1/2 lengths over Nonproductiveasset.

Ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye and carrying 116 pounds, Adams Trail covered one mile on the turf in 1:36 3/5 and, as the second-longest shot in a field of seven, paid $29.40, $10 and $5.20.

The win was the fifth in 19 lifetime starts for Adams Trail and was worth $33,000, increasing the career earnings of the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Fast Play to $204,308.

Nonproductiveasset, ridden by Corey Nakatani, crossed the finish line two lengths in front of Opera Score, the 17-10 favorite ridden by Gary Stevens.
